Information for ITT Nursing Students Seeking Transfer Options

Information for ITT Nursing Students Seeking Transfer Options

Please refer to the list of Texas Board-approved professional nursing programs under the Education link. Each ADN nursing program will consider applications for transfer based upon criteria in their school policies to make decisions about admission and transfer of credits. Most ADN programs in the Dallas area have indicated they will accept applications from ITT students and will make decisions about admitting students on an individual basis.

Updates on Prescribing Controlled Substances

	Updates on Prescribing Controlled Substances

Date Created:Thursday, August 4, 2016

APRNs who prescribe controlled substances in the State of Texas need to be aware of upcoming changes to the laws regarding prescribing and ordering these drugs. The requirement for controlled substances registration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be eliminated beginning September 1, 2016. The DPS registration process will not be replaced by another process. You will continue to be required to hold registration from the US Drug Enforcement Administration in order to prescribe controlled substances.

Additionally, the prescription monitoring program that is currently known as Prescription Access in Texas will be moving under the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) effective September 1, 2016. It is our understanding that the new prescription monitoring program will be available through the TSBP’s website. Information will be forwarded to current Prescription Access in Texas users explaining how to update their registrations for the new system. Information regarding the new system will be added to our website as it becomes available; however, the new prescription monitoring program will not be accessed through the Texas Board of Nursing website. Information regarding the new prescription monitoring program is available on the Texas State Board of Pharmacy’s website at www.pharmacy.texas.gov/PMP/. A video regarding the new system is also available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXDuEADMAHg.

2016 Workplace Violence Against Nurses Survey

2016 Workplace Violence Against Nurses Survey

The Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies (TCNWS) is currently conducting a survey of individual nurses on workplace violence against nurses stemming from HB 2696 passed in the 84th Legislative Session.

A sample of approximately 7,500 RNs and LVNs in Texas have been mailed a survey regarding their experiences with workplace violence as it relates to both verbal and physical violence over the course of their career.

Data collected from this survey will serve as a guide for the development of policy recommendations by the TCNWS Advisory Committee and information you provide may be instrumental in shaping legislation geared toward preventing workplace violence against nurses in Texas.

Make Your Voice Heard!!

Your participation is highly encouraged!

A random sample of nurses will, or have already, received a survey by regular mail. You can participate by returning the survey in the included self-addressed, postage-paid envelope by August 30th.

Whether you have or have not experienced violence in the workplace, your response to this survey is needed to illustrate the prevalence of workplace violence against nurses in Texas and to help the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies Advisory Committee make policy recommendations to address workplace violence against nurses in Texas.

Results from this survey will be available in December 2016.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact TCNWS by email at TCNWS@dshs.state.tx.us or by phone at 512-776-6723.

Texas Board of Nursing to Undergo Review by the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission

Texas Board of Nursing to Undergo Review by the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission

Date Created:Monday, January, 2016

The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) will undergo review by the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission during the 2016-2017 review cycle for the 85th Legislative Session. The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission was established by the Texas Legislature following passage of the Texas Sunset Act in 1977. The Sunset Advisory Commission performs periodic assessments of state agencies to answer this basic question for the legislature: Are the agency’s functions necessary, and if so, how can its functions be done more efficiently?

The Sunset review process entails three phases that ultimately lead to a legislative determination of whether the agency will continue to exist with improvements or be abolished with authority to continue its functions up to one year following the legislation. In the first phase, the agency performs a global self-evaluation of its functions that are documented in the agency’s self-evaluation report. The Texas Board of Nursing Self-Evaluation Report was completed in September, 2015 and is publicly available on the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission website at: www.sunset.texas.gov/reviews-and-reports/agencies/texas-board-nursing-tbn During this phase, Sunset Commission staff review the self-evaluation report, receive confidential public input, evaluate the agency, identify problems, develop recommendations, and publish a staff report. BON staff encourages nursing stakeholders to review the Texas Board of Nursing Self-Evaluation Report and provide input. A public input form is available at: www.sunset.texas.gov/input-form.

The second phase of the Sunset review process commences with a Sunset staff presentation of its report and recommendations with an opportunity for the agency to present its response. Public testimony is heard by the Commission during this phase and published on the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission website at: https://www.sunset.texas.gov/. The Commission meets following the public hearing to consider and vote on which changes will be recommended to the full Texas Legislature during the 85th Legislative Session.

The third and final phase of the Sunset review process entails legislative action. A Sunset bill on the agency is drafted, filed, and goes through the normal bill procedures. The Senate and House hold committee hearings to debate the bill leading to either bill passage or failed adoption. Finally, the Governor signs, vetoes, or allows the bill to become law without signature. This final outcome determines whether the agency continues with improvements or is abolished with the authority to continue it functions up to one year following the decision.

BON staff appreciate nursing stakeholder input throughout the Sunset review process. For more information, please visit the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission website at: https://www.sunset.texas.gov/.
